The former mayor of Munich, Christian Ude, once wrote: "A Wiesn without Schichtl is unthinkable. The Schichtl is as indispensable as the beer, the radi and the chicken. And he is absolutely right.

Since 1869, the Schichtl has been the greatest hand-made fun at the Munich Oktoberfest, a fun, macabre pleasure that has survived for generations, but where dozens lose their heads every day. The "beheading of a living person on an open, brightly lit stage using a guillotine" is one of Munich's oldest serious Wiesn traditions. Almost as old as the breakfast rush and much older than the beer tent closing.
